Summary of Capabilities and Achievements 

Specialist in educational development and reform who has lived and worked in Africa for the last two decades. Substantial project management experience with international donors and the private sector. Instructional systems expert who has developed innovative methodologies at all educational levels from primary to tertiary. Particular interest in using technology to increase educational quality, improve access and decrease costs.  

Major strengths 

Application of instructional systems development principles to real-word educational innovation, including technology-enhanced learning. Practical understanding of monitoring and evaluation issues.  Ability to combine systems thinking with group facilitation techniques to empower strategic planning, policy development, and project design. Familiar with donor, private-sector and non-governmental sectors. Strong team-building and training abilities. Effective cross-cultural work history, with particular emphasis on Africa. Good entrepre­neur­ial skills, including planning and marketing.  

Significant achievements 

Designed and implemented one of the first curriculum modularization programs at an American university. Established a technology-enhanced, individualized nursing program at a Canadian technical college that produced substantial achievement gains for students. Managed a USAID-funded project to develop radio lessons to teach English to rural Kenyan students, demonstrating performance improvements equivalent to first-world computer-assisted learning at an average annual cost per pupil of one dollar. Assisted in the methodology’s replication to serve more than 500,000 learners in South Africa and Lesotho. Managed three basic education reform projects in Southern Africa, supporting improvements in curriculum and materials development, continuous assessment, teacher training, and management information systems. Designed an innovative online learning system for South African secondary students. Carried out several evaluations and descriptive studies of basic and higher education reform in Southern Africa.
