"Dom"—Russian Dramatic TV Serial, Episodes 11-40

Economic topics such as the workings of markets, labor, capital, and foreign exchange are being presented in a series of 40 forty-five minute dramatic programs ("Dom") being produced in Russia. Ten scripts were developed and reviewed by leading economists during the development phase of this project and shown for the first time in Russia during 4-15 December 1995. A press conference was held on September 19, 1995 at the conclusion of the filming of the first ten episodes. Six different TV channels covered the press conference and subsequently broadcast extracts, together with video clips from some of the episodes, and in some cases interviews with scriptwriter Alexander Adabashian. There was also excellent newspaper and radio coverage.

Each block of ten episodes forms a kind of mini-series. Episodes 11 through 16 are written, and others in this block (11-20) were to be completed as soon as funding was mobilized. The economic themes will continue, and health and environmental themes are being added in this block.

Interest in the series was expressed by several foreign TV companies. German, Chinese, French, Mexican, Brazilian and even South African television companies have expressed interest. Interest in the project has been expressed by the Gore-Chernomyrdin Commission staff, some of whom  read the scripts. Unfortunately, sufficient funding was not forthcoming, and neither episodes 11-40 nor any others were produced. The original 10 episodes have been rebroadcast by a number of Russian television stations.

From the outset the work on the project was assisted by the Consultative Council, its members being: Eugeni Yasin - Minister of Economy; Sergei Vasiliev - Deputy Minister of Economy; Peter Filippov - member of the Presidential Council; Sergei Glaziev - Chairman of the State Duma's Committee for Economic Policy. These were the positions they occupied in 1995.
