Bringing the Internet to EthiopiaTelevision Program and Video
In November 1995 a report entitled "Proposals for Internet Connectivity in Ethiopia" was issued by an Ethiopian organization called Bringing the Internet to Ethiopia (BITE) led by and Executive Committee chaired by Ato Dawit
Johannes, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Ethiopia and also a member of the High Level Working Group on Information and Communications Technologies in Africa (HLWG) set up under UNECA auspices. With active support from BITE and UNECA's Pan African Development Information System
(PADIS), BITE, the World Bank's Electronic Media Center, and PADIS prepared a script and signed a contract with Shala Advertising Enterprise to produce an English language program entitled
Bringing the Internet to Ethiopia. Shooting of the program began on February 5 and the program was completed in March, 1996. The Ethiopian program is part of a broader project for the
HLWG, Television Programs and Video Presentations on African Internet Development.
Peter Knight, then Chief of the Electronic Media Center, was co-scriptwriter and conducted a number of the
interviews included in the video/TV program. Copies of the video in
broadcast quality (Betacam SP) and VHS are available from the
World
Bank's Film and Video Unit (do a search on Film
